LiPo Safety 101 and Rules

This page is all about Lipo Safety. This is meant to set a few ground rules, but also just inform all drivers and guests of the potential risk of LiPo batteries and running on an Wood and Carpet RC car track.

DTNRC LiPo Battery Safety

At DTNRC (Don't Tell Nobody RC), we believe RC racing should be fast, competitive, family-friendly, and above all else, safe. Whether you're a seasoned racer chasing podium finishes or a first-time driver attending your very first event, battery safety is everyone's responsibility.

Modern RC racing relies heavily on Lithium Polymer (LiPo) batteries because they provide incredible power, consistent performance, and long run times. The same technology that makes LiPo batteries great for racing also means they require proper handling and care. While LiPo incidents are rare when batteries are used correctly, damaged, improperly charged, or abused batteries can swell, vent, smoke, or catch fire.

The Thunder Chicken events feature a mobile 60-foot by 24-foot carpet race track installed inside premium venues. Because we race on carpet and around spectators, racers, families, and valuable equipment, DTNRC takes battery safety seriously.

Our goal is not to create fear around LiPo batteries. Our goal is education, awareness, and preparedness.

Throughout the venue, DTNRC places clearly marked emergency fire response stations containing sand buckets and fire response equipment. These stations are positioned around the track to help quickly contain any potential battery incident before it can spread. While the likelihood of a LiPo fire is low, preparation is part of being a responsible race organization.

All racers are expected to inspect their batteries before use, charge only with proper LiPo-compatible chargers, utilize balance charging whenever possible, and discontinue use of any battery that appears swollen, damaged, punctured, overheated, or otherwise unsafe. Batteries should never be charged unattended and should always be charged in a fire-resistant charging bag or container.

The DTNRC community is built on helping one another. If a racer is unsure whether a battery is safe, we encourage them to ask questions. Experienced racers, race officials, and DTNRC staff are always willing to help evaluate a battery or answer safety questions.

Our events are designed to provide an exciting, professional racing experience while maintaining a safe environment for racers, spectators, sponsors, and venue partners. By following basic LiPo safety practices and looking out for one another, we can ensure every Thunder Chicken event remains focused on what matters most: great racing, great competition, and building an amazing RC community.

At DTNRC, safety isn't about slowing down the fun. It's about making sure everyone gets to enjoy it. 🏁🔥
